The past is never dead! When you react strongly to a person or situation, there’s a reason that comes from your past. What’s hysterical is historical. For example, I used to freak out if someone close to me dropped and broke something, because when that happened in my past, pain often followed. Once I understood this past pain point, the freak outs evaporated. In truth, all our relational challenges stem from how past experiences - particularly painful ones - subconsciously influence current thoughts, words and behaviors. Resistance to this truth is common - but futile. The great news is that the damaging reactions don’t have to continue. You can use your past to heal yourself and your relationships in the present.
