As a kid, sometimes my sister would mentally torture me, and my dad would advise,  “Just don’t respond.”

Perhaps he should have said, “Practice the Pause.”

The Pause is that moment I wish my 8 year old self had taken instead of chasing my 13 year old sister with a butter knife.

As an adult, the Pause is that moment we wish we’d taken to calm down and pause to reflect before snapping back at a spouse, our kid, a sibling, a dog. Before sending back a harsh, ill-thought out e-mail or text.

Training ourselves to pause lets us move out of the fear and anger of reactivity and into a place where love and curiosity can fuel our responses.

Your family knows how to push your buttons, because they installed them.
